Études de cas sur la gestionCanada On the Kerguelen Archipelago no control is planned for Rangifer tarandus although with individuals being spotted on Foch Island, it is acknowledged that future work is necessary (Chapuis et al, 1994) Greenland A large fence has been created in areas where Rangifer tarandus subsp. fennicus and semi-domesticated R. Tarandus are both present, to prevent hybridisation (Koubek & Zima, 1999, H. Henttonen pers. comm. 2006; as seen in Hentonen & Tikhonov, 2008). Subspecies R. t. fennicus is also strictly protected under Annex II of the EU Habitats and Species Directive (Hentonen & Tikhonov, 2008). Russian Federation The hunting of Rangifer tarandus is strictly controlled (Hentonen & Tikhonov, 2008). Sth. Georgia and Sth. Sandwich Iss (sub-Antarctic) Following three translocations in 2001, 2002 and 2003, some reindeer have already been translocated to islands in the Falklands (Poncet, 2003 in Varnham, 2006). Phased eradication will take place after the completion of the relocation project. Total eradication is the final goal (McIntosh and Walton, 2000 in Varnham, 2006). Svalbard and Jan Mayen In Eastern Russia there are strict anti-hunting measures in place, however poaching is still a key threat (A. Tikhonov pers. comm. 2006; as seen in Hentonen & Tikhonov, 2008). Research is urgently required to identoify the reasons as to why the Novaya Zamlya popualtion of R. t. pearsoni is in decline (Hentonen & Tikhonov, 2008).

This version of the database has been developed by the IUCN SSC ISSG as part of an Overseas Territories Environmental Programme funded project XOT603 in partnership with the Cayman Islands Government - Department of Environment. The compilation is a work under progress, the ISSG will manage, maintain and enhance the database with current and newly published information, reports, journal articles etc. 5.
