A prevention programme was set up in 1993 to prevent the accidental introduction of rats. This consists of trap and poison stations, community education, outreach to vessels, local shipwreck response capabilities, and regulations. Several rats have been killed on the St Paul docks but there is no evidence of establishment. Snap traps appear to be more effective than poison, but cause minor loss to non-target species. The Pribilof Islands have about three million nesting seabirds, a million northern fur seals, and an endemic shrew amongst other wildlife. The islands remained largely rodent free with the exception of house mice, partly impeded by a lack of harbours, although they have been inhabited since 1786. A rat prevention programme was begun in 1993 following a boom in commercial fisheries which made the introduction of rats seem likely unless some preventative action was taken.
