Phytophthora cinnamomi spread across south-eastern USA as much as 200 years ago. By 1824, there were reports of sudden mortality of American chestnut and related Castanea species in forests and woodlands across the southern Appalachians. Phytophthora cinnamomi has been connected to littleleaf disease which has affected shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain of south-eastern USA since the 1930s. P. cinnamomi also causes damage to other pine species in the south-eastern USA, and oak is damaged between South Carolina and Texas. Phytophthora root rot also causes damage to Frasier fir (Abies fraseri), a Christmas tree (Hansen, 2003).

Replantings of American chestnut (Castanea dentata) seedlings in southern Appalachian forests have a high mortality due to P. cinnamomi. Similar problems have occurred with replantings in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina. Seedling mortality was highest in wet, compacted soils (Rhoades et al. 2003).
