Details of this species in Henan
Occurrence: Established and expanding
Source: Cai et al. 2008
Introduction: Unintentional (accidentally)
Species Notes for this Location:
First detected as a well-established population in Qingshui (Shanxi province) in 1998, the red turpentine beetle has done considerable damage to the coniferous forests of Shanxi and has spread into adjacent forests in Shaanxi, Hebei and Henan provinces.
By comparing genetic diversity between native and invasive populations, Cai and colleagues (2008) showed that the origin of the Chinese D. valens population was likely from California (USA). According to economic trade records, Shanxi once imported a large quantity of bark-covered conifer logs from the western USA for mining construction during the 1980s. It is probable that a relatively large number of red turpentine beetles were transported into Shanxi with these logs (Cai et al. 2008).
Management Notes for this Location:
Reduction in native biodiversity: More than 500 000 hectares of pine forests have been attacked in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hebei and Henan and it is estimated that over 10 million Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. (alternative spelling Pinus tabuliformis) have been killed by the beetle (Yan et al. 2005, in Cai et al. 2008).
