    Species Notes for this Location:
    The island of Svalbard is beleived to have a population of 10,000 Rangifer tarandus as well as an endemic subspecies, R. t. platyrhynchus (Hentonen & Tikhonov, 2008).
    Management Notes for this Location:
    In Eastern Russia there are strict anti-hunting measures in place, however poaching is still a key threat (A. Tikhonov pers. comm. 2006; as seen in Hentonen & Tikhonov, 2008). Research is urgently required to identoify the reasons as to why the Novaya Zamlya popualtion of R. t. pearsoni is in decline (Hentonen & Tikhonov, 2008).
