    Species Notes for this Location:
    Seven reindeer from Sweden were introduced in 1955-56 on Grande-Terre (Lésel, 1967 in Chapuis et al., 1994).

    This population is difficult to monitor. Their number is estimated at about 4000 individuals.

    Impacts:
    Habitat alteration: The reindeer (along with sheep and sheep) have contributed to the depletion of the Kerguelen cabbage (Pringlea antiscorbutica) and the Azorelle (Azorella selago). On Grande-Terre, Azorella selago is the main food source for reindeer (Chapuis et al, 1994).
